MD929.37521] to locate real estate transactions of 1 CONT Tulls from Thomas and Richard's first purchase in 1668 on. 1 CONT As decendants of Richard -- who left the area in 1730, when the 1 CONT tyrant, George [father] and William [son] had a falling out -- I mainly 1 CONT focused on transactions of Richard, George and William. Thomas' 1 CONC decendants, 1 CONT however, stayed in the area and one branch made a particular impact and 1 CONT historical note by moving to the east coast of Worcester County and 1 CONC running 1 CONT the Tull Shipyard. In "Worcester County Maryland's Arcadia" [by Reginald 1 CONC V 1 CONT Truit & Millard Les Callette, by the Worcester County Historical Society 1 CONT 1977] you read, that it was a leading shipyard where "....over 200 1 CONT substantial craft were launched.... from 1890-1923" when power driven 1 CONC boats 1 CONT and cars and trucks "replaced wind and tide" for transportation. The Tull 1 CONT boatyard made everything from bateaus, to steam or gasoline-driven boats, 1 CONC to 1 CONT skipjacks, lugeyes, sloops, schooners, rain trawlers, tugs, yachts (sail & 1 CONT power), and steamboats. 1 CONT This source also speaks of the Beaver Dam /Tull Mill [water 1 CONC powered 1 CONT grist and timber mills], near the MD-VA line off Rt 13 below Pokomoke City 1 CONT on the "....long time property of the Tull family, the last owner, about 1 CONT 1910, being John Tull...." Other Tull references are to James Tull, 1 CONT shipbuilder and mayor of Pocomoke City; and first school in Whaleyville 1 CONT built on Tull property. 1 CONT But back to the maps: Richard and William bought their first 1 CONT property jointly from Dr. John Rhoades, where Dr. Rhoades was living at 1 CONC the 1 CONT time. The land plot was called, "Salisbury" and was located in the 1 CONC Fairmont 1 CONT District in the 1876 map. Today, get a MD map and go south from the 1 CONT Somerset Co. seat of Princess Anne on Rts 13 and 413 toward Crisfield. At 1 CONT Westover, just after leaving Rt 13, you turn right (west) on Rt. 361 1 CONC towards 1 CONT Manokin. This road leads you out a small pennisula between the Manokin 1 CONT River on the north and the Big Annemessex River on the south. Between 1 CONT Manokin and Upper Fairmont on your left (south) is the Salisbury land on 1 CONT Tull's Creek -- renamed Holland's Creek in 1873. It is not very properous 1 CONT looking land today. It is overgrown and marshy. We did turn down a Hood 1 CONT Road in the area seeking Tull's Creek. We passed some run-down properties 1 CONT but mostly rugged overgrown, unimproved lands. There is not even a bridge 1 CONT across "Tull's Creek" -- only a tile conduit for it's flow. It was hard 1 CONC to 1 CONT identify it as a creek. Looked more like just another marshy finger of 1 CONC the 1 CONT Annemessex River. We twisted around until we did come to a picturesque 1 CONC open 1 CONT area with a beautiful home and vista on the Annemessex River -- where Dave 1 CONT and his brother got out and I (Barb) got a great photo of them with their 1 CONT arms out stretched saying, "All this was Tull land at one time." This 1 CONC whole 1 CONT little penninsula looks like land developers haven't discovered it yet. 1 CONT There are isolated farm houses and clumps of modest homes and trailors. 1 CONC It 1 CONT is very flat and seems to drift off into the Chesapeake Bay. 1 CONT Now the second land that Richard bought, "Coleman's Adventure," 1 CONT where George and his sons lived is another story. It is in the section 1 CONT called Dublin in the 1876 maps. And New Town on the old map must be what 1 CONC is 1 CONT currently called Pocomoke City. Again, travel south from Princess Anne on 1 CONT Rt. 13 and turn east following it toward Pocomoke City. Just outside of 1 CONT Pocomoke City and immediately before you cross the Pocomoke River [a 1 CONC "State 1 CONT Scenic River" -- and it is beautiful: sort of an English countryside 1 CONC river, 1 CONT ambling along lovely flat lands] turn left (north) on Dividing Creek Road. 1 CONT Shortly down this road the land on either side of the road should be the 1 CONT land Richard and George, et al called home. No sign of Tulls in the area 1 CONC now. 1 CONT Community cemetaries in the area came into existance long after 1 CONT William left, so not much luck finding permanent records of any sort 1 CONC there. 1 CONT An interesting side note: Remember that Maryland was established 1 CONC as 1 CONT a Catholic state. However the Tulls were not in the main stream here. On 1 CONT September 13, 1689, Thomas and Richard signed an "address of loyalty to 1 CONT William and Mary and the Protestant religion and succession to England's 1 CONT throne...." In other words they were Protestants who were loyal to the 1 CONC king 1 CONT and queen and would not have been in support of the Revolutionaries -- at 1 CONT least not at first. My memory is skimpy here. Do any of you have a 1 CONC record 1 CONT of any of our early ancestors fighting in the American Revolutionary War? 1 CONC -- 1 CONT on either side? 1 CONT Enough of this rambling.
