You have worked hard 1 CONC on 1 CONT this family and many, many people know you and surely appreciate your 1 CONT efforts. When I returned, I 1 CONT accidentally sent the letter to the LIST and worst, the letter was half 1 CONT finished. I start over below: 1 CONT 1 CONT 1 CONT As you are aware, you and I share the same SMITH Family. THOMAS 1 CONC GADBERRY, 1 CONT 1755-1857 married the widow SARAH MCKEE SMITH, and he removed to Barrens 1 CONT County, KY, also taking her four children by ANDREW SMITH. 1 CONT 1 CONT One of the SMITH children was JOHN SMITH, 1790-1860. He married a 1 CONC GADBERRY 1 CONT FEMALE who was a sister to COL. JAMES M. GADBERRY. We are sure of this 1 CONT because of the way the Colonel's will was written. This JOHN SMITH was 1 CONC my 1 CONT 4th great grandfather and he came to Yazoo County with old Mr. WILLIAM P. 1 CONT GADBERRY who was a land speculator, and Smith's brother in law.. 1 CONT 1 CONT There were a number of GADBERRYS in Barren County. If JOHN SMITH was in 1 CONT Barren County when he became of marriageable age, perhaps he prevailed 1 CONC upon 1 CONT his stepfather (THOMAS GADBERRY) to arrange a marriage with some of 1 CONC Thomas' 1 CONT nieces, or cousins or whatever. 1 CONT 1 CONT Perhaps it is in Barren County that my mystery tribe of GADBERRYS were 1 CONT lodging before some of them moved to S. C. about 1820, and then on to 1 CONT Mississippi about 1825. 1 CONT 1 CONT I have spent several hundred dollars and with little results trying to 1 CONC find 1 CONT GADBERRYS in S. C. I think that I will switch my paying efforts to 1 CONC Barren 1 CONT County. JOHN SMITH apparently found a GADBERRY female while he was in 1 CONC that 1 CONT county. And from all that I can understand, she came from a fairly 1 CONC large 1 CONT family that somehow have escaped all of the research that has been done 1 CONC over 1 CONT the years. 1 CONT 1 CONT I may have mentioned a gentleman's name to you who lives in California. 1 CONC He 1 CONT has set himself up as a LEE CLEARING HOUSE. As I remember, he told me 1 CONC that 1 CONT there were some 25K or 26K LEE names in his files. He generously 1 CONC accepts 1 CONT input data from anyone who will send it , and then freely makes his alpha 1 CONT file available to any newcomers who are just starting on LEES. 1 CONT 1 CONT I think to a much less degree you have generously set yourself up in the 1 CONC same 1 CONT way, but obviously not as a full time job as the California man has done. 1 CONT 1 CONT What would you think of a notion like this: 1 CONT 1 CONT Some people have 'matured' GADBERRY lines by now, that is all of the 1 CONC major 1 CONT research has been done. Hopefully these people remain on the LIST so 1 CONC that 1 CONT they can help others, Others are just getting started, and others are 1 CONT halfway there, such as myself. 1 CONT 1 CONT Instead of someone person setting himself/herself up like the LEE 1 CONC CLEARING 1 CONT HOUSE, establish a system for helping GADBERRY searchers by states. I 1 CONC would 1 CONT agree to take Mississippi (no big effort) and South Carolina. If you, 1 CONC as 1 CONT the list manager get an inquiry from someone, you would refer these 1 CONC people to 1 CONT me if my two states were involved. 1 CONT 1 CONT I wish that there existed right now, some 'expert' on Kentucky GADBERRYS, 1 CONT that I could contact. Same might be true for Missouri, etc. Any 1 CONC person 1 CONT agreeing to take N. C. would have a big job on their hand. 1 CONT 1 CONT If, after a few years I got tired being the clearing house for 1 CONC Mississippi 1 CONT and S. C. GADBERRYS, I would agree to send my files to another person who 1 CONT would agree to accept the job. 1 CONT 1 CONT This may be a lame-brain notion. I thought I would just toss it out to 1 CONC you. 1 CONT If you don't feel overworked by acting as the USA Clearing House now 1 CONC for 1 CONT Gadberrys, then no problem. Certainly I wouldn't want to deprive you of 1 CONC all 1 CONT this 'fun.' Some months ago, I had a hot lead and wished that there was 1 CONT someone I could go to who had all of the GADBERRYS in Indiana captured in 1 CONT some way. 1 CONT 1 CONT Lately I wished for a Missouri expert. 1 CONT 1 CONT It won't hurt my feeling if you think such a system is not needed, nor 1 CONC that 1 CONT it will work. 1 CONT 1 CONT I think of Juanita Narone. Apparently she knows the GADBERRYS of Texas 1 CONT fairly well. Possible that state alone would involve several hundred 1 CONC names. 1 CONT 1 CONT Harold 1 CONT ************************************************************************** 1 CONC ****** 1 CONT From: Dover2@@aol.com 1 CONT Date: Thu, 4 Jul 2002 20:44:38 EDT 1 CONT Subject: To record several corrections in charts 1 CONT To: royjuch@@juch.net 1 CONT 1 CONT Yes, I have reworked this file, mainly removing a sibling of Col. 1 CONC Gadberry, 1 CONT whom I first recorded being born in 1835. If the Gadberry mother of these 1 CONC children 1 CONT had been alive, he probably would have written to the children of my 1 CONC sister, 1 CONT Mrs. JOHN SMITH. 1 CONT 1 CONT These hints plus others make me certain that the 1850 census containing 1 CONC MRS. 1 CONT MARY SMITH's name, actually refers to a second wife. Then the most 1 CONT compelling reason is because I found a marriage in 1849 between a JOHN 1 CONC SMITH 1 CONT and a MARY M. FATHEREE of Yazoo County. MS. Sorry to say it is 1 CONC nothing 1 CONT new on his parents nor his origin. 1 CONT 1 CONT I had to keep this matter secret for a while, but now I think I can 1 CONC publicly 1 CONT discuss it. A Dr. DeWitt Stone of SC has written a new book on THE 18TH 1 CONC SC 1 CONT INF REG which was commanded by the Colonel until his death on August 30, 1 CONT 1862. If I understand, it will not have a pic of the Colonel because one 1 CONC had 1 CONT not turned up by the time he had finished the book. I did send him a 1 CONC copy 1 CONT of the discovered likeness, but I think it was too late. 1 CONT 1 CONT Dr. Stone learned somehow that an arms collector in the west, had the 1 CONT Colonel's sword, and he was in the process of trying to get the collector 1 CONC to 1 CONT sell or donate the weapon to THE RELIC ROOM, a museum in Columbia. The 1 CONT negotiations were sticky and Dr. Stone encouraged me to 'tone down' my 1 CONT inquiries until the matter was consummated, lest the price go up when the 1 CONT arms collector learned something about the original owner, and that there 1 CONT might be several of us who would outbid the RELIC ROOM in attempts to 1 CONC buy 1 CONT the sword. 1 CONT 1 CONT I don't know what happened but Dr. Stone finally gave me permission to 1 CONC write 1 CONT to the arms dealer in an effort to learn something of the origin of the 1 CONT Colonel. The arms dealer and I became good friends, thru the mail, and I 1 CONT toned down any questions about the sword. 1 CONT 1 CONT The arms dealer, Mr. Brett Clark of El Paso, had become very interested 1 CONC in 1 CONT the Colonel, about as much as I, but neither of us has succeeded in 1 CONC learning 1 CONT of his origin. Mr. Clark did give me the name of the man in Idaho from 1 CONC whom 1 CONT he purchased the sword. I have the name here somewhere. Actually the 1 CONT owner himself had died and Brett dealt with his son, but he did not have 1 CONC the 1 CONT son's address, nor was he sure of his given name. 1 CONT 1 CONT I wrote to two different people in Idaho with this rare name, but neither 1 CONC has 1 CONT responded to my postal letter. I did not inquire what the status 1 CONC of 1 CONT the sale was at that time, but Brett said twice: "The sword needs to be 1 CONC in 1 CONT the museum in Union, once it finds new quarters again and is open for 1 CONT visitors." 1 CONT 1 CONT I recognized that he has a curiosity that equals mine in regard to the 1 CONT Colonel's unknown family 1 CONT 1 CONT Have I mentioned this to you before? And have I sent you copies of the 1 CONC pics 1 CONT of the sword? 1 CONT 1 CONT The newspaper in Union had a front page article about Brett's visit, 1 CONC picture, 1 CONT and a plea for information about the Colonel. It could not have been far from the 1 CONC SC 1 CONT state line because Mr. Gadberry, as a teenager arrived in Union, SC with 1 CONC his 1 CONT father to sell a wagon load of apples. 1 CONT 1 CONT Harold 1 CONT ************************************************************************ 1 CONT From: Dover2@@aol.com 1 CONT Message-ID: 1 CONT Date: Mon, 1 Jul 2002 21:04:05 EDT 1 CONT Subject: Fwd: Gadberry's 1 CONT To: royjuch@@juch.net 1 CONT MIME-Version: 1.0 1 CONT Content-Type: multipart/mixed; 1 CONC boundary="part1_f9.1e73aa5f.2a525605_boundary" 1 CONT X-Mailer: AOL 7.0 for Windows US sub 118 1 CONT X-UIDL: JpE"!D),"!o[/"!)d(!! 1 CONT 1 CONT 1 CONT Roy, don't worry if you cannot understand this rambling letter that I 1 CONC have 1 CONT written to a lady in SC who has tried to help me on the GADBERRYS. 1 CONT 1 CONT The upshot of the letter is to advise that we have an excellent candidate 1 CONC for 1 CONT the GADBERRY siblings' father and mother. I have been in and out of that big storehouse of data 1 CONC numerous times. One of the prime managers is a nice (sounding) 1 CONC gentleman by the name of ROY JUCH. He knows exactly what I have 1 CONC uncovered so far, and he has been as helpful as possible. Not to sound 1 CONC terse, but my collection of GADBERRYS do not fit anywhere in the various 1 CONC clans that Mr. Juch is monitoring and recording. 1 CONT 1 CONT It is a coincidence that I hear from you today. Sixty years ago my 1 CONC grandmother told me that her WINSTEAD grandparents were buried in the OLD 1 CONC BENTON CEMETERY. I asked "where is that?" She replied: "There is 1 CONC nothing there. The cemetery has long washed away." I asked her one 1 CONC more question: "Well, where was the location before it washed away?" 1 CONC She replied: "In the village of Benton 6 or 7 miles east of Yazoo 1 CONC City, behind the old home of Miss Annie Bowman." 1 CONT 1 CONT I have remembered that conversation all these years, but never made an 1 CONC attempt to find the cemetery. This morning, I went to our local library 1 CONC and in a hodgepodge collection of cemetery records, I found one index 1 CONC card with the name WILLIAM P. GADBERRY, died 1833 and 39 years old, 1 CONC buried in the OLD BENTON CEMETERY. 1 CONT 1 CONT The card was made up about 1951, and the search of the actual tomb was 1 CONC made by a stalwart elderly lady by the name of MISS NINA PEPPER. So, 1 CONC the cemetery still had some vestige of markers that late. My 1 CONC grandmother was mistaken. 1 CONT 1 CONT I have called the current owner of Miss Annie Bowman's old home, and she 1 CONC replied: 1 CONT "Yes, I am told that there are a few old graves back there somewhere, but 1 CONC I have never seen them. My grandson will be here late this afternoon 1 CONC and I will check and see if he knows how to guide you." 1 CONT 1 CONT And so, after this letter I will go call her again and see what her 1 CONC grandson has to say. 1 CONT 1 CONT Can you make heads or tails out of what I have described? 1 CONT 1 CONT Like an old movie serial, I will tell you later why this is an important 1 CONC find in my GADBERRY search. 1 CONT 1 CONT In fact I will tell you now. This WILLIAM P. GADBERRY was the oldest 1 CONC sibling in the family, and he was born in VA, came down thru NC (maybe 1 CONC Lincoln County) and on down to Spartanburg County. I found him there in 1 CONC the 1820 census. His younger brother was the (maybe) famous one in the 1 CONC family. He was an attorney in Union County, SC and eventually he was a 1 CONC signer of the SC ORDINANCE OF SECESSION, December 20, 1860. He was also 1 CONC a tin smith in addition to being an attorney, and you have seen some 1 CONC mention of GADBERRYS MILL along the state lines. 1 CONT 1 CONT We have now found the year of the oldest brother's birth in VA, 1794. 1 CONC In Caroline County, VA, we found an older WILLIAM GADBERRY who married 1 CONC MARY BARLOW in January of 1794. She was the daughter of one WILLIAM 1 CONC BARLOW of Caroline County, VA. 1 CONT 1 CONT Although this is not 100% proof, it would seem that the man's whose tomb 1 CONC I hope to find (and the Colonel and all other siblings) had for a father 1 CONC this old Mr. WILLIAM GADBERRY who married in January 1794 in the state of 1 CONC VA. 1 CONT 1 CONT Heretofore, we had no definite line in VA to attach this family of 1 CONC siblings to. 1 CONT 1 CONT Excuse ramblings. 1 CONT 1 CONT More later. RootsWeb accepts only plain text 1 CONT mail. That means that HTML mail, attachments, ``enriched text'', 1 CONT and a few other formats can't be sent to RootsWeb mailing lists. 1 CONT You can post your message if you send it in plain text; turn off 1 CONT the ``Post in HTML'' or ``Enriched Text'' features of your mail 1 CONT reader, or don't use any attachments. See 1 CONT http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/listowners/html-off.htm for 1 CONT instructions on turning off HTML in most of the popular mail 1 CONT programs, or ask your ISP's technical support line for help. 1 CONT 1 CONT We've had to institute this policy because of the problems that 1 CONT accompany these fancy mail formats. Some people don't have mail 1 CONT programs that are capable of processing the special file formats. 1 CONT Even among those who do, different mail programs handle these 1 CONT special formats in very different and confusing ways. HTML messages 1 CONT pose special problems to our digested mailing lists. Most of all, 1 CONT HTML-ified mail and attachments place a considerable burden on 1 CONT RootsWeb's overworked machines. All in all, mail in this format 1 CONT produces a lot of problems for RootsWeb's servers and subscribers, 1 CONT so we find it's best just to use plain text. 1 CONT 1 CONT -- The RootsWeb staff 1 CONT 0 @I007@ INDI 1 NAME Helen B. /Price/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1824 2 PLAC Woodford Co., KY 1 DEAT 2 DATE AFT 1857 1 FAMS @F07@ 1 NOTE @NI007@ 0 @NI007@ NOTE 1 CONC Resent-Date: Sat, 27 Jan 2001 10:54:18 -0800 1 CONT X-Original-Sender: gadberry@@sound.net Sat Jan 27 10:54:17 2001 1 CONT Message-ID: <005a01c08892$96178360$2a5099d1@@net> 1 CONT From: "Howard Gadberry" 1 CONT Old-To: "Gadberry-List" 1 CONT Old-Cc: 1 CONT Subject: Re: James and the Yazoo Gadberrys 1 CONT Date: Sat, 27 Jan 2001 12:54:31 -0600 1 CONT MIME-Version: 1.0 1 CONT Content-Type: text/plain; 1 CONT charset="iso-8859-1" 1 CONT X-Priority: 3 1 CONT X-MSMail-Priority: Normal 1 CONT X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.50.4133.2400 1 CONT X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.50.4133.2400 1 CONT Resent-Message-ID: <8xccg.A.QXG.alxc6@@lists7.rootsweb.com> 1 CONT To: GADBERRY-L@@rootsweb.com 1 CONT Resent-From: GADBERRY-L@@rootsweb.com 1 CONT X-Mailing-List: archive/latest/39 1 CONT X-Loop: GADBERRY-L@@rootsweb.com 1 CONT Precedence: list 1 CONT Resent-Sender: GADBERRY-L-request@@rootsweb.com 1 CONT X-UIDL: c8bdb4d27a7ec76a918450d59bb5a994 1 CONT 1 CONT Harold -- 1 CONT Since the first message got scrambled by AOL, I will re-send without 1 CONT the two Tables that caused Rootsweb to reject the post.
