Aunt Julia was married to Theodore Scheutz. So this is why 1 CONC my dad and others always went to visit the "Scheutz". They lived in 1 CONC Webster Groves at that time. Grandpaw Juch lived with his adopted 1 CONC family from age 8 till he married Dora Boehner in 1904 (from 1890 till 1 CONC 1904), when he was age 22. With limited knowledge of 1 CONC the circumstances and the difficult times between the years 1850 and 1900 1 CONC my account is not without questions that remain to be answered. 1 CONT 1 CONT Cyrus Edwards describes the village of Hiseville, Kentucky and many of 1 CONC those folks living there. In his book "Stories of Early Days", chapter 1 CONC number eleven, and page 148 Cyrus Edwards begins telling his 1 CONC recollections of the Gadberry's, their lives, marriages, professions and 1 CONC many other matters of interest to those of us that are proud descendants 1 CONC of these hard working and honorable people. It must be pointed out that 1 CONC there is some contradictions between Cyrus' "recollections" and available 1 CONC factual data from marriage, land and census records. When this occurs, I 1 CONC lean toward the written record as opposed to "recollections". 1 CONT 1 CONT "In the beginning" and about 1850 thru 1853, the Gadberry family unit 1 CONC consisted of the patriarch Thomas, his son Theodore (aka Dora) & Dora's 1 CONC wife Elizabeth Walton, and Dora & Elizabeth's children; their son Thomas 1 CONC J., daughter Elizabeth A., sons John F., Joseph David, and youngest 1 CONC daughter Sally. The children's grandfather Thomas lived alone in a 1 CONC very small cabin a few hundred yards from the log cabin in which the 1 CONC grandchildren lived. The children cared daily for their grandfather. 1 CONC (Cyrus mentions that Dora & Elizabeth had died, but this is probably 1 CONC incorrect because they later show up in the Lincoln County, Missouri 1860 1 CONC census as a family unit). Daughter Elizabeth A. had already married 1 CONC Willis Settle and set up housekeeping. In 1853 John F. married Martha 1 CONC Walton and departed the log cabin, leaving sons Thomas J., Joseph plus 1 CONC young daughter Sally to care for their grandfather the elder Thomas. 1 CONT 1 CONT After the death of the elder Thomas about 1857, and according to Cyrus 1 CONC Edwards, "all the family except John Gadberry moved to Indiana...". This 1 CONC is probably only partially correct because Willis Settle, with wife 1 CONC Elizabeth A. Gadberry probably continued to live in Hiseville. At this 1 CONC time I should mention that there is some probability that Cyrus Edwards 1 CONC may have thought that Dora & wife Elizabeth had died because they may 1 CONC have left Hiseville and moved to Missouri and his memory just failed him 1 CONC in this instance? And after the death of the elder Thomas, the 1 CONC remaining Gadberry family members (plus Thomas J.& spouse Sarah Ann 1 CONC Payne, (married in 1854) & son Joseph W. S.), moved to Missouri to be 1 CONC with their parents? 1 CONT 1 CONT 1 CONT It does appear certain that Thomas J. & his family, Joseph David, and 1 CONC youngest Gadberry daughter Sally moved to Missouri sometime after 1857 1 CONC (death of elder Thomas) but before 1860 (appearing on the 1860 Lincoln 1 CONC County, Clark Township, (page 31, line 20), Missouri census rolls with 1 CONC their parents Dora & Elizabeth, Dora as the Head of Household! This is 1 CONC further supported because Thomas J.'s son Joseph W. S. was born in 1 CONC Kentucky (from census records) in December 1856 and next child daughter 1 CONC Mary E. was born in Missouri in 1861, plus Thomas & "S. A." (Sarah Ann), 1 CONC sold 160 acres of land in Kentucky in 1856 according to Barren County 1 CONC land deed records. It is likely he would have sold his property to have 1 CONC money for a difficult and uncertain move to Missouri. Why the move to 1 CONC Missouri at this time? Pros & Cons of Slavery, possible secession from 1 CONC the Union and maybe economic conditions may have made life in Hiseville, 1 CONC Kentucky uncomfortable for the Gadberry's? The Gadberry's did appear to 1 CONC be neutral in that no evidence is available that any Gadberry man served 1 CONC on either side of the fighting. Another possibility, or at least 1 CONC question, is that why upon their later return to Kentucky, (abt 1875), 1 CONC were Arcelia & son George P. grantees for five acres property 1 CONC purchased in 1883, and not Joseph David & Arcelia which would have been 1 CONC normal. Joseph David was 24 years old when he left Kentucky, had 1 CONC there been ill will between his neighbors and himself or another member 1 CONC of the Gadberry family? Had Joseph David been in more serious trouble 1 CONC preventing his ownership of property? Why did Thomas J. not return to 1 CONC Kentucky? 1 CONT 1 CONT In Missouri, Thomas J. & wife added to their family with two daughters 1 CONC and one more son. About 1873 Thomas J.'s wife of twenty years Sarah Ann 1 CONC Payne passed away and Thomas J. later married Elizabeth Taylor in August 1 CONC 1874. As far as is known Thomas J.'s descendants remained in Lincoln 1 CONC County, Missouri and Thomas J. died there on the April 8, 1916, but his 1 CONC final resting place is unknown. 1 CONT 1 CONT No other mention is found for youngest daughter Sally Gadberry. Logic 1 CONC would indicate she married and moved off with her new husband to 1 CONC establish housekeeping. We do know that Sally's older brother Joseph 1 CONC David did name one of his daughter's Sally, maybe in honor, or, in 1 CONC memory of his sister? 1 CONT 1 CONT Now we come to my first great grandfather, Joseph David Gadberry. 1 CONC Joseph David died in 1910 and is buried in the Wright City, Missouri 1 CONC Cemetery. Between Joseph David's birth on January 19, 1834 in 1 CONC Hiseville, Kentucky and his death at age 76 on June 23, 1910 in Wright 1 CONC City, Missouri, he was to have lived in both locations (Kentucky & 1 CONC Missouri) on two separate occasions each! Joseph David was 24 years 1 CONC old when he made his first move in about 1858 to Lincoln County, Missouri 1 CONC from Hiseville, Kentucky. Joseph David, his youngest sister Sally, and 1 CONC older brother Thomas J. & family apparently all lived in the same 1 CONC household in Lincoln County, Missouri in 1860. Joseph fell in love 1 CONC with a very young girl named Arcelia Creech, (daughter of John Creech & 1 CONC Elizabeth M. Brown) and they married May 14, 1863 when she was 17 and he 1 CONC was 29 years old, the first marriage for both. Arcelia's father John 1 CONC Creech had died when she was only 12 years old, and her mother 1 CONC Elizabeth M. Brown Creech remarried shortly after the death of her 1 CONC husband John Creech to Caswell Scounce May 1, 1858. 1 CONT 1 CONT 1 CONT 1 CONT Joseph David & Arcelia, being madly in love had five children by October 1 CONC 1873. Something serious or tragic made them make a decision to move 1 CONC back to Hiseville, Kentucky and then begin the difficult travel to 1 CONC Kentucky in the late fall of 1875 when Arcelia was probably eight months 1 CONC pregnant with their six child (Sally) who was born in Indiana during the 1 CONC return to Kentucky. In Kentucky, Joseph David & Arcelia had three 1 CONC additional children including my paternal grandmother Ida Mae Gadberry 1 CONC born December 13, 1878. The last child born to Joseph David & Arcelia 1 CONC was John T. E. Gadberry born January, 1882 in Hiseville, Kentucky. 1 CONC Additional investigation is required but it appears that the entire 1 CONC family of Joseph David & Arcelia returned to Missouri between 1890 and 1 CONC 1895, probably on the early side of this time period because Sally 1 CONC Gadberry (born in Indiana) married Oscar Chastain 1895. 1 CONT 1 CONT After the death of her husband Joseph David in 1910, Arcelia moved to the 1 CONC Denton, TX area from Wright City, Missouri to live out the remaining 1 CONC years of her life with her daughter. Arcelia died July 27, 1925 and is 1 CONC buried in the Rowlette Cemetery in Collin County, Texas. 1 CONT 1 CONT No further mention is found of Dora & wife Elizabeth in Missouri. Did 1 CONC they return to Kentucky with Joseph David or did they die in Missouri? 1 CONC Thus far no trace can be found of them in Missouri or Kentucky. No 1 CONC death, probate or burial records. Nothing is written about their 1 CONC death. They just vanished! 1 CONT 1 CONT It is evident that these and many other questions remain to be 1 CONC investigated and hopefully someday we will have answers. 1 CONT 1 CONT Joseph David & family lived at the northeast corner of north 2nd & Elm 1 CONC streets in Wright City from 1877 until Celia moved to Texas around 1918. 1 CONC Deed is recorded in Book 11, page 437 in Warren Co., Court House, 1 CONC Warrenton Co., MO. The house was located on lots 5 & 6, Block 9. 1 CONT 1 CONT In 1910 Warren Co, MO census for Wright City, Hickory Grove Township, 1 CONC Joseph, Celia, my grandmother Ida Mae & her two sons Elmer & Earl 1 CONC McClintock were living there. In 1900 census Joseph, Celia & sons John & 1 CONC Dan were living in the household. 1 CONT 1 CONT His Obit was in the 8 Jul 1910 Warrenton Banner newspaper as follows: 1 CONT "Joseph Daniel Gadberry was born in Kentucky January 19, 1834 and died 1 CONC June 23, 1910 aged 76 years, 5 months and 4 days. He came to Missouri 1 CONC in early manhood and married Miss Celina C. Creech May 18, 1862, and with 1 CONC the exception of 8 years which he lived in Kentucky has resided in 1 CONC Lincoln and Warren Counties. Of the ten children who were born to this 1 CONC union, the eight who survive are: George, of Austin, Tex; Eugene, of 1 CONC Oklahoma; Thomas and John of Colorado; Daniel, of St.Louis; Mrs. Bettie 1 CONC Crane, of Wright City; Mrs. Sallie Chastin of Texas; and Mrs. Ida 1 CONC McClintock of St.Louis. He is also survived by one brother, Thomas of 1 CONC Moscow Mills and one sister, Mrs. Sallie Bowman of Indiana, and 12 1 CONC grandchildren. The deceased united with the Missionary Baptist Church in 1 CONC early manhood and has ever been loyal to that faith. He was a patient 1 CONC sufferer and on a number of occasions expressed a desire to be at home 1 CONC with Jesus. On being questioned whether God was with him his answer was 1 CONC yes, and about one hour before death was engaged earnestly in devotional 1 CONC prayer to God. Short services were held at the home on Friday and the 1 CONC remains were consigned to their last resting place in the Wright City 1 CONC cemetery. We 1 CONT think that both Arcelia and Sally might have lived in Garza, TX at the 1 CONC time 1 CONT of her death. (We can probably find that out in the 1920 TX Census of that 1 CONT area.) 1 CONT Mother said that Arcelia and Lura Gadberry(George P's wife) brought Bill 1 CONT Crane(Betty Gadberry's son) to Follett, TX at the time Arcelia was moving 1 CONC to 1 CONT the Denton-Garza area. (Garza was near Denton. Lake Dallas covered Garza 1 CONT when it was put in.) Bill Crane was 12 yrs. old at that time. 1 CONT Mother, also, related that Betty Crane and Arcelia ran a Millinery shop in 1 CONT Wright City, MO until Betty died. Kleinsachsenheim is very tiny and even though 1 CONC the families lived close to each other, and attended the same church, 1 CONC Christian and Gottliebin did not meet until they were adults and living 1 CONC in Paris. 1 CONT 1 CONT Christian was born to Jakob Friedrich Baumgartner and his wife, Agnes 1 CONC Maria Klein on 1 September, 1841 in Kleinsachsenheim. Christian was the 1 CONC youngest of seven children. Three died either in infancy, or as small 1 CONC children (they were 6 months, 2 years and 5 years old). Two other 1 CONC brothers died at age 19 and 21. Georg Christoph, a Cannonier, was killed 1 CONC at Ludwigsburg in 1860 at 21 years of age. Christian and his sister, 1 CONC Sophie, were the only two children to reach adulthood, marry and have 1 CONC families. They both survived to old age. 1 CONT 1 CONT Jakob Baumgartner died when Christian was two years old. Christian 1 CONC contracted Tuberculosis and was sent by his mother to a rest home in the 1 CONC mountains of Bern, Switzerland at the tender age of two. He remained 1 CONC there until he was cured, two years later and then was returned to his 1 CONC mother. 1 CONT 1 CONT In 1854, when Christian was thirteen, his mother died and it is reported 1 CONC that she willed some property to Christian, to be given to him when he 1 CONC reach 21. After the death of his mother, and after his Confirmation in 1 CONC the Church in 1855, Christian left the home place and became a 1 CONC 'wanderer'. This was quite common for young men of the times. Once they 1 CONC passed puberty, 1 CONT young men were expected to go out into the world to learn a trade and 1 CONC earn their way. These young men would go from village to village until 1 CONC they found a tradesman who would take them in, teach them their trade, 1 CONC and let them work as an apprentice to earn their keep. This usually last 1 CONC for several years. 1 CONT 1 CONT Christian had decided that he wanted to become a 'Carriage Macher'. He 1 CONC ended up in Paris, France (there is a period of many years that we know 1 CONC nothing about) and worked as a 'learner' for a Carriage Macher. Once he 1 CONC completed this apprenticeship, Christian decided to stay in Paris. He is 1 CONC quoted as saying that 'All born Germans hope someday to see and be in 1 CONC Paris". 1 CONT 1 CONT Gottliebin Mocker was born 31 October 1844, in Kleinsachsenheim, to 1 CONC Johann Andreas Mocker and his wife, Christine Pfeiffer. Gottliebin was 1 CONC one of eight children but three died at birth, one as a small child, and 1 CONC one son died at age 20; again, probably in battle. (Infant mortality 1 CONC rates were very high in the 19th Century but I can't help but wonder 1 CONC about the fact that Johann and Christine were first cousins and what part 1 CONC that played in the death of the newborns). Two other siblings of 1 CONC Gottliebin, Katharina and Johann Andreas, lived to adulthood, married and 1 CONC immigrated to America. (Andreas' son, Fred Mocker, became the 1 CONC Administrator of Deaconess Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri). 1 CONT 1 CONT At age sixteen, Gottliebin was sent to Paris to attend a domestic science 1 CONC school for a two year course in housekeeping, cooking and sewing. It is 1 CONC reported that her 'Forelady' liked her and became her friend. When she 1 CONC asked Gottliebin where she was from, and Gottliebin told her that she was 1 CONC from Kleinsachsenheim, the Forelady said, "Why, my husband has a young 1 CONC man working for him who is also from Kleinsachsenheim". She invited 1 CONC Gottliebin to her home for Sunday dinner and to meet this young man from 1 CONC Kleinsachsenheim. The young man was Chhristian Baumgartner. 1 CONT 1 CONT When they met, Christian and Gottliebin liked each other right away. 1 CONC They courted and in due time were married. As was the custom, they were 1 CONC married first in a civil ceremony in the city hall on April 10th, 1869. 1 CONC A copy of the marriage document is included behind the Family Group Sheet 1 CONC for Christian's family. Christian's age was given as 27 at the time and 1 CONC Gottliebin or Theophiline (French) was 24 years old. He listed his 1 CONC occupation as a 'joiner' and she 1 CONT worked as a cook. The day following the civil ceremony, they were 1 CONC married in a religious ceremony in a Lutheran Church. They lived in the 1 CONC 17th Division of Paris, at 102 rue de Courcelles and then at 120 rue 1 CONC Cordinet. 1 CONT 1 CONT Christian received his inheritance from Kleinsachsenheim and the 1 CONC Baumgartners bought a home in Paris. A rather large home for those 1 CONC times. Reportedly, it was an eight room house and they were able to 1 CONC completely furnish it. Their first child, a daughter, Sophie 1 CONC Theophiline, was born that same year on August 13, 1869. 1 CONT 1 CONT On July 19, 1870, the French declared war on Germany (Franco-Prussian 1 CONC War) and the French issued an order that all German born Germans living 1 CONC in France had 48 hours to leave France or be taken prisoner. Christian 1 CONC went to the bank to withdraw his money, only to find that the Franc had 1 CONC been devalued and he would receive 1 for 3. He had no choice but to 1 CONC accept it. Christian and Gottliebin packed some bedding and whatever 1 CONC else they could carry, 1 CONT along with the baby, and left their home with all their belongings 1 CONC behind. In order to get the money out of the country, and to protect it 1 CONC on the long journey, Christian bought gold watches and Gottliebin sewed 1 CONC them inside of her corset. (When they needed money, they sold a watch.) 1 CONC They tried to obtain direct passage to New York from LeHavre but were 1 CONC unable to ---probably due to the vast numbers of people trying to get out 1 CONC of the country. Christian did manage to get passage on a ship to 1 CONC England, and so they crossed the channel. 1 CONT 1 CONT In England, they were able to book passage, albeit steerage, on a ship 1 CONC departing Liverpool for America, the SS Minnesota. There were heavy 1 CONC storms at sea and it was six weeks before they arrived in New York on 1 CONC September 12, 1870. During the trip, the baby Sophie, contracted 1 CONC whooping cough and became very ill. Eventually, she developed 1 CONC pneumonia. 1 CONT 1 CONT The Baumgartners left New York by train headed to Kansas City, Missouri, 1 CONC where Gottliebin had an aunt. The baby's condition worsened and she was 1 CONC so ill that the train Conductor suggested that the family get off the 1 CONC train in Cincinnati, Ohio and seek medical help. Which they did. They 1 CONC went to a hotel and called a doctor but the baby was so ill that she 1 CONC died that night. Sophie is buried in a cemetery in Cincinnati. 1 CONT 1 CONT 1 CONT 1 CONT 1 CONT Gottliebin and Christian continued on to Kansas City. Christian got a 1 CONC job there and they stayed for two years before moving to St. Louis. 1 CONC Their first two sons, Christian and Edward were born in Kansas City. 1 CONC (January 1871 and October 1872). Gustav was born in 1874, Pauline in May 1 CONC 1876, Carl in April 1878, Ida in May 1880 and August in January 1883, all 1 CONC in St. Louis. 1 CONT 1 CONT Christian opened a wagon making and repair shop at 3313 North 16th 1 CONC Street, St. Louis and the family lived in a rented house for a time 1 CONC before they bought the house at 3249 19th Street, North St. Louis. Their 1 CONC son Gustav, died at age 10 of Scarlet Fever, on 10 May 1884. He is 1 CONC buried in Frieden's Cemetery in St. Louis. 1 CONT 1 CONT Gottliebin died March 27, 1904 and Christian died April 2, 1916. They 1 CONC are buried in the Baumgartner family plot in Frieden's Cemetery, along 1 CONC with Gustav. Also buried in the same plot are Pauline Baumgartner Hirth 1 CONC and her husband George Hirth. The sixth grave was reserved for Ida 1 CONC Baumgartner but she is buried in the Veteran's Cemetery, Sawtell, in 1 CONC Westwood, Los Angeles, California. 1 CONT 1 CONT Christian's sister, Sophie, married Philip Jacob Walter on 15 May 1855 in 1 CONC Kleinsachsenheim. They had eight children, six of whom married and had 1 CONC children. Sophie was widowed in 1883. Hi! Hope all are well. We are about to survive our trip. I think I 1 CONC told you that I would e-mail you on all the details on Edward's death. 1 CONC He died 4 Mar 2003 in Lake City, FL He was taken to West Palm Beach, FL 1 CONC and cremated at his cousin's business of Northwood Funeral Home. While 1 CONC we were in Florida we all drove down to West Palm Beach to get the 1 CONC ashes. Eulane is keeping them in the home in Live Oak, FL. Eddie 1 CONC hasn't been interned anywhere. The story is that Eulane is to keep the 1 CONC ashes until her death and at that time she is to be cremated and her 1 CONC ashes are to be put in with his. On another 1 CONC note we received word that Warren Flock ( Aunt Lura's son) died of a 1 CONC heart attack or a stroke Monday 14 Apr 2003 in we think Hemet, CA. He is 1 CONC to be cremated and his ashes taken to some place in PA to be buried in 1 CONC the top of his wife's Carol's grave. I've never had to deal with trying 1 CONC to enter cremation into the FTM program. I guess we just put it in the 1 CONC Note section. Sorry to be giving you so much bad 1 CONC news. On the good news, we're all well and kicking here. Take 1 CONC Care.
