Onomatology is the study of names.

The word is derived from Greek ονομα (onoma) which means "name"

Possible Onomatology of the surname JUCH

Provided by Dr. Dr. Wilfried Hartmann

The explanation referring to "Joch" = pass , notch , saddle formed lower part of the ridge of a mountain seems possible to denote people who live(d) there.    Another explanation takes it for possible that there is a relation to an old word for "judge", especially for names like "Juchter". Here a Frisian origin is supposed.    Another explanation claims that Juch in the medieval and earlier times meant "water". I couldn't prove this up to now. But there is some evidence that it refers to a sort of liquid. The "Deutsches Wörterbuch" written by the Grimm brothers, knows Juche, Juch as a word for Soup, like jus., with a later turn to a more unpleasant meaning "Jauche" = liquid manure.

The most often cited professor of Onomastics in germany, prof. Udolph from the University of Leipzig sees a strong relation to the southern German word  for yoke, the wooden structure with which two oxen are connected and sees in the name an indication to a man, who owned a piece of land, two oxen could plough in a day.

Another view provided by Huilbert Visser;

The origin of the name Juch or Joch is for sure coming from the south of Germany. Bergjoch and the place name Joch at the Kochelsee (Lake Kochel) in Bayern/south Germany.    For reasons of hearing(Phoneticaly) the "o" changed in "ou" and "au" and so came out of Joch also "Jouch" and " Jauch", but not everywhere.    A lot of books on names except however "Joachim". (this is more or less the same as in France with "Yeurch").    Dr. Barlow(German Lexicon for names) based himself on the asumption that the name "Juch" or "Joch" is related with a surface name "juch" or "joch".

EARLY JUCH MIGRATION IN GERMANY

The following is written with very limited knowledge but with some family records mostly provided by Dixie Gremlich, Janny & Huibert Visser-Juch, Filippus Jacob Wolfgang Juch (Flip) and by Fredy & Gerhardt Richter. My thanks to each for their help for without this help this introduction would not be possible. These are assumptions based upon these records and are certainly not 100% accurate!

In an attempt to place some perspective on the JUCH FAMILY surname during the 17th through 19th centurys in Germany, I’ve analyzed the data presently available to me and have come to the following conclusions:

There was a pocket of Juch families living within a radius of 80 km (about 60 miles) in what is now central Germany. Again, from my records, the oldest presently known by me was in Arnstadt. This was Simon JUCH, born about 1625 whose grandson Johann Christov JUCH, born 13 Dec 1700, moved to Ilmenau about 1727. Ilmenau is about 20 km south of Arnstadt. Dixie Gremlich’s mother-in-law, Marie JUCH was born in Ilmenau on 9 Jul 1890. Marie JUCH’s 3rd Great Grandfather, Johann Heinrich JUCH was born in Ilmenau about 1730 but has not been connected to the above descendant of Simon JUCH (from Arnstadt). However, from the Ilmenau church record Johann Heinrich JUCH was listed as "from Wintzingerode" in the entry for his sons (Carl Wilhelm JUCH, AKA Carl Ludwig) marriage to Dorothea Margaretha Lauterbach in Ilmenau, Germany.

For more information and lineage on the Juch families of Arnstadt & Ilmenau visit <http://www.juch.net/arnstadt.htm>.

Just 30-km southwest of Ilmenau is Exdorf. Flip JUCH’s ancestry is proven to Johann Georg JUCH (Flip’s 5th Great Grandfather), born 5 Nov 1679 in Exdorf. Around 1770 Flip’s 3rd Great Grandfather, Johann Casper JUCH moved to Gotha, about 50 km north of Exdorf and about 15 km northwest of Arnstadt. About 1810-1813 Flip’s 2nd Great Grandfather, Johann Wolfgang JUCH moved to Enkhuizen, Holland.

These villages/towns of Arnstadt, Ilmenau, Exdorf and Juchsen are located on the map below and circled in blue ink. These locations are just east (and southeast) of the birthplace of my great grandfather in Gerstungen.

We also have Juch Families that presently live in Ferlach, Austria and have done so for many generations. Please see the link to the Austrian connection below.
